Posted by Jeanna Courter on Jun 8, 2018 2:27:52 PM

Warehouses and fulfillment centers are often thought of as similar and the words used interchangeably. In reality though, they are quite different. While both fulfillment centers and warehouses are large buildings that store inventory for businesses that sell products, that's pretty much where the similarities end. The services that each provide and the cases where each are used vary widely, depending on the needs of the organizations that uses them. Here we will explore the functions of each, so you can better choose which is right for you and your business needs.

Do you really need that tomorrow? Saving on time-critical & expedited shipping.

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Mar 15, 2018 3:04:00 PM

How fast is "right away?" The specific answer to this question can save you and your customers a substantial amount of money. This, of course, is because "right away" is a subjective assessment. To some people, it means they need an item the same day, but to others, two or even three days is considered fast. Since shipping companies charge substantially different amounts for all of their speed levels, it's important to nail down the details before printing the label. Here are some tips to help:

High Density Storage Solutions in the Warehouse

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Dec 19, 2017 11:36:18 AM

At PBD, we are constantly innovating to come up with solutions and processes that make us more efficient and best fit our clients needs. With the e-commerce and consumer goods industries booming, we noticed our standard pick locations may not be the best fits for all types of products. We needed a better solution for clients with a high number of SKUs, but a lower quantity of inventory on hand for each item. This is where high density storage cells came in.

PBD Worldwide utilizes high density storage cells to help consolidate the physical footprint for certain accounts in our distribution centers. This storage solution utilizes all the space available in our racks, creating more pick locations. Our standard pick locations typically hold around 40 SKUs per 11-foot bay where our high density storage cells can fit hundreds of SKUs in the same 11-foot bay.

These cells are customized to fit our client’s product. It works great for accounts with high SKU counts, such as apparel, that would take up a large portion in our fulfillment center. It also reduces the distance the picker would travel with our traditional storage locations, so orders can be processed faster.

Join John Hill, PBD's Business Process Specialist, has he highlights these high density storage cells and how they are benefiting PBD's partners.

Partnering with a 3PL Company - Why a Site Visit is Vital Before Making a Decision.

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Mar 8, 2017 11:18:43 AM

Using a third party logistics provider for your company's order fulfillment needs should be carefully examined before you begin. Just like you need to vet everything (and everyone) else before you begin a partnership, it's no different with a 3PL company. Considering they are acting as an extension of your business, you have to feel comfortable in what they do every day.

Unfortunately, not all companies take the time to investigate potential fulfillment providers before signing the contract. Some think a logistics company can work independently without needing input directly from the business partner. But to keep shipments running smoothly without confusion and errors, you have to communicate with your fulfillment partner daily. An on-site tour of their distribution center is one part of the vetting process that should not be overlooked and is crucial to ensuring you select the right fulfillment partner. Here are our top tips for things to look for during a fulfillment center facility tour.

Parcel Shipping Mistakes Killing Your Profits

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Feb 20, 2017 3:17:58 PM

There is a surprising amount to know when it comes to economically shipping products to your customers. You want them to have great service at a good price. However, are you really getting the best bargain when it comes to your shipping needs? Here are some of the most common mistakes in shipping that are costing you money.

Incorrect Packaging. Many companies have gone to a limited number of standard sized boxes for use in shipping to reduce costs. However, this strategy could actually be costing more than it saves. Most parcel carriers charge not just by weight, but by dimension as well. To learn more about dimensional weight, check out the UPS support center. Additionally, placing small items in large boxes requires more packing material adding to the shipping costs. Customers do not want to pay for extra room in a box. Having the right size packing is important not only because it protects the products, but it also protects your brand image. Trying to cut costs through packaging will only end up hurting your image and identity in the end.

How do you protect yourself from the Grinch Who Steals Packages? Today is National #PackageProtectionDay, and we is sharing our top tips to ward off parcel thievery this holiday season.

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Oct 28, 2016 2:21:20 PM

Fulfillment services can make or break your business. However great your product, however much people may want it, and however successful your marketing department may be, you still need to make sure that product reaches your consumer, in pristine condition, on time. Ideally, you want a responsible fulfillment partner who can hit the ground running - and can adapt as your business grows. Today, we are going to look at Interviewing Potential Fulfillment Partners - 5 Questions You Should Ask.

1. What additional services do they offer? Traditionally, distribution partners have provided the infrastructure to ship and track goods. Creating a Safe Warehouse Environment for Employees

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Aug 11, 2016 2:35:32 PM

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, warehouses experience around 15,000 accidents, illnesses and injuries every year. Safety in the warehouse should be a top priority to protect employees and keep businesses running smoothly. Here are some tips for creating a safe warehouse environment for employees.

Education

The first step towards safe practices while working in a warehouse environment is education. Beyond new employee training, hold safety meetings a few times per month to review and highlight various OSHA standards and safe practices. Watch your employees while working and take note of areas that need strengthening, as well as, ask the employees directly about any training they want regarding safety practices. Creating a culture of safety and educating employees properly will go a long way in reducing potential safety hazards.

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Aug 5, 2016 10:07:47 AM

A well-designed e-Commerce return policy can play a vital role in attracting new customers and increasing existing client satisfaction. A good return policy goes a long way in showing your new and existing customers that you believe in your products. Below are tips for creating an e-Commerce return policy that will facilitate the return process for you and your customers.

1) Design a return policy with the input of supply chain personnel and customers. Don’t be afraid to ask for input or advice. Supply chain workers and customers often have valuable suggestions and feedback that could help you improve your existing policy. Let your customers know you are interested in what they have to say. Are they satisfied? Do they have any complaints or concerns? Is there anything they feel can be improved?

2) Make sure that your return policy is easy for your customers to find. A well-crafted policy will be useless if it is not visible to customers. Be sure to post your return policy in a high-traffic area of your website. Also, make sure the customer can understand it once they find it by keeping it clear and simple. Speak/write in terminology that your customer base will understand.

Building Brand Awareness Through the Supply Chain Experience

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Jul 15, 2016 2:08:30 PM

The importance of consistently building brand awareness cannot be overstated. There are effective brand-building strategies that can be undertaken through each stage of the order preparation process to solidify your customer's loyalty to your brand. Here are our top ideas for building brand awareness through the supply chain experience.

Use Customized Cartons and Boxes. The box or carton is the first thing that a customer sees when his or her order arrives. By using custom boxes that display your company's logo, you will continue to build upon your customer's familiarity with your brand. There are cost effective alternatives to custom printed boxes such as placing stickers with your logo on the outside of the box.

Brand the Other Packaging Materials. Choosing a non-standard filler material will set you apart from the competition. Wrap your products in branded tissue paper to add an extra level of excitement for customers while they open their package. Another nice touch is to use a colored tape that complements your brand vs. the traditional clear packaging tape.

Top Reasons to Outsource Your Order Fulfillment

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Jun 23, 2016 1:47:36 PM

When it comes to establishing a supply chain management (SCM) solution, companies can choose a variety of options. Given the competitiveness of global business, overseeing SCM is demanding and costly in numerous ways. Here we offer the top reasons to outsource your order fulfillment.

Flexibility. When a company partners with a third-party logistics provider (3PL), it can expand or downsize with fewer concerns about the impact on employees or customers. For example, if your company has strong seasonal fluctuations, partnering with a 3PL partner will help you manage those spikes and decreases in order volume effectively from both a staff and space scalability perspective. Working with an outside fulfillment partner also gives the company access to their resources and technology, which can extend company infrastructure.

Keys to Beating Backorder Frustration

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Jun 1, 2016 10:32:31 AM

Customers never enjoy receiving the dreaded news that the product they purchased or are thinking about purchasing is on backorder. The assignment of reorder points and regular reviews of inventory level reports are two strategies that can help a retailer prevent backorders and the frustration that comes along. However, no company is immune to backorders. It’s important to know how to communicate backorders to customers and respond to customers who have ordered a product that is out of stock. Here are some tips to help keep a positive customer experience during these situations.

Proactive communication is key

Communicate to customers on the front end by noting the backorder on your website. Even better, include an expected ship date if you have that information available. If a customer has already made a purchase before the backorder update was communicated, the customer deserves a timely notification that a purchased product is currently out of stock. As soon as you receive news of the backordered product, reach out to customers by phone and/or by e-mail to notify them. Whenever possible, provide customers with an estimated shipping date and let customers know that you will be providing them with regular updates on the status of their backorders.

Understanding and Reducing Reseller Chargebacks

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Apr 29, 2016 4:56:49 PM

Written by: Cory Raphaelson, Vendor Compliance Specialist at PBD Worldwide

Chargebacks are financial penalties for non-compliance with retailer’s shipping requirements. Chargebacks can be for something as simple as a carton not being labeled correctly, not being packed according to retailer specifications or sending a late or duplicate Advanced Shipping Notices (ASNs).

Did you know that there is a metric for chargebacks?  Resellers are looking for chargebacks to be 2-3% of sales from a supplier.  The premise is that chargebacks are designed to improve the supply chain process.  The efficiency gained is supposed to create a shared savings to both the supplier and the reseller which ultimately reduces the consumers cost.  So, how does your company reduce their number of reseller chargebacks? Here are some key points to keep in mind.

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Mar 31, 2016 2:26:15 PM

Return items are par for the course for online retailers. How a company handles returns is the difference between a happy customer and a lost opportunity. Retailers that provide good customer service can expect a higher percentage of repeat business. According to a study conducted by comScore, consumers are 82% more likely to place an order when an online retailer has a hassle-free, no-cost returns policy that does not require a restocking fee or return shipping fee. What’s more, 92% of shoppers are likely to make a future purchase if the company offered an easy return experience.

Customers return items for many reasons. Is the item defective? Or maybe it is an unwanted gift, the wrong size or the customer simply changed their mind. Regardless, your customers want a simple and flexible return process. Basing your return policy on creating a positive experience will prove beneficial to your business since studies show that customers who initiate the most returns are typically your most loyal shoppers.

Choosing the Right Shipping Strategy

Posted by Jeanna Courter on Mar 15, 2016 2:39:59 PM

High shipping and handling costs are the number one reason customers abandon shopping carts. According to a study done by Business Insider, 58% of U.S. Online Shoppers cited that the reason for their cart abandonment was that shipping costs made the total purchase more than expected.

Choosing the right shipping strategy or strategies is vital to your business success. Charging too little can hurt your profits while charging too much could make you less competitive and therefore less appealing to customers. Below we discuss some of the most common shipping strategies and the pros and cons to consider when deciding which one is right for your organization.

Free Shipping with Minimum

Free Shipping with a minimum is a very common incentive for customers. One report showed 90 percent of customers will buy more with a free shipping offer, but one-third will not buy at all if it is not available. When using this shipping strategy, it is important to research how much your average order is and set the minimum accordingly.

Pros: This shipping strategy can boost the value of average orders as customers may buy additional items to receive the discount.

Cons: You are accepting the cost of shipping, which cuts into your margins. If one sets the minimum order too low, it will hurt profitability.
